After almost 40 years 'The Seagull' is played in Vígszínház again
2021. 12. 13.

A play, where you can find all the pain of unrequited love, the unconditional love for theatre, the eternal seeking for happiness, the solitude and the fight against mediocrity. One of the most famous plays by Chekhov ‘The Seagull’ will be premiered on the 17th of December at Vígszínház, staged by David Doiasvili, the director of the Vaso Abashidze Music and Drama State Theatre, Tbilisi. The show is performed by Luca Márkus, Eszter Nagy-Kálózy, Attila Vidnyánszky Jr, Géza Hegedűs D., András Stohl, Ákos Kőszegi, László Méhes, Tünde Majsai-Nyilas, Dorottya Antócia and Zsombor Ertl.

The play ‘The Seagull’ by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was first premiered on the 17th of October, 1896. We know from the correspondence of Stanislavski, the director of the play and Chekhov, that it was written as a comedy, but already on the first rehearsal the actors were crying about all the beautiful and sometimes also painful texts. This duality is very exciting for the theatre makers ever since: the characters of the play are poetic and effortless at the same time, with clear and sometimes quite simple dreams and desires, which cannot be reached, but also not even expressed most of the times.

‘The Seagull’ is a very popular theatre play in Hungary, although the last time it was played at Vígszínház was 1982. The show performance staged by István Horvai is still legendary: partly because of the unique set, a horse on the stage, and partly because of the actors like: Éva Ruttkai, Gábor Reviczky, Judit Hernádi, Erzsébet Kútvölgyi, Iván Darvas and László Gálffi. In the year of the 125th anniversary of Vígszínház, the iconic play will be on repertoire again with another amazing cast, staged by David Doiasvili and translated by András Kozma especially for Vígszínház.
