Premiere of ‘Cabaret’ at the Open-air Theatre of Margaret Island
2021. 06. 24.

Vígszínház premiered the world-famous musical Cabaret on the 9th and 10th of July at Margitszigeti Szabadtéri Színpad. The very popular work of Joe Masteroff, John Kander and Fred Ebb leads us to the smoky, sweaty, but enchanted Berliner night, the empire of rapture, manifest desire and endless passion. The spectacular performance full of well-known songs is staged by Attila Béres.

As a gratitude for their enormous work in the very difficult last months and year, the general rehearsals were played on the 31st of May and on the 1st of June exclusively for invited healthcare workers. Then, for the first time in the 125-year-old story of Vígszínház, the opening night took place not in the building of the theatre, but on the open-air stage of the Margitszigeti Szabadtéri Színpad for the audience.

In the center of the play we can see a love story happening during the last days of the Weimar Republic. A love story between Sally Bowles, the English singer of the infamous bar called Blue Angel, and Cliff Bradshaw, the young writer looking for inspiration and arriving to Berlin on New Year’s Eve in 1929. The not at least idyllic love is shadowed by the history itself, but the Berliners are still going to night clubs and bars and having uncontrolled parties, while the terror and inhumanity becomes unnoticed a part of their everyday life.

The musical first premiered 55 years ago on the Broadway, based on the script ‘I am a camera’ by John Van Druten and some short stories by Christopher Isherwood. The film based on this play, directed by Bob Fosse in 1972, starring Liza Minelli won 8 Oscars and conquered the world. The popular song of the soundtrack like Money-Money, Mein Herr and Cabaret are hummed since then.

The main roles of the performance at Vígszínház are played by: Zoltán Seress, Csenge Szilágyi/Enikő Dobó, András Kern, Éva Igó, Bence Brasch and Szabolcs Horváth.
