On 22 January we celebrate Hungarian Culture Day, while two hundred years ago, on 20 January, Imre Madách was born. On this special day, we commemorate the writer, who was born 200 years ago, with excerpts from The Tragedy of Man.

We are all familiar with Imre Madách's magnum opus, The Tragedy of Man, an exceptionally important chapter in our literary history, one of the greatest achievements in the history of Hungarian drama, this magnificent dramatic poem on a grand scale. Perhaps we can recite one or two of its lines, which have become a catchphrase, since it was a memorable, compulsory reading in secondary school, but few of us pick it up now that we have understood the intellectual content of the work.

In this video, made for the Day of Hungarian Culture and the 200th anniversary of Imre Madách's birth, we have put together a number of well-known and some less frequently quoted excerpts, performed by the actors of the Vígszínház, to encourage a rereading of this work, which is also significant on a world literary scale.
