The season 2021/2022 starts with the premiere of 'Children of Paradise'
2021. 08. 24.

Vígszínház Budapest is led by Péter Rudolf until 2026

After one of the longest shutdown of its history, Vígszínház will reopen on the 4th of September with the premiere of ‘Children of Paradise’. Until December Vígszínház will have the openings of the plays ‘Cabaret’ and ‘The Seagull’, and Pesti Theatre will premiere the performances ‘The Stone’, ‘Bella Figura’ and the ‘Party’. The director of Vígszínház between 2022 and 2026 will remain Péter Rudolf, who in his application emphasized: one of the most important tasks for the next five years will be to create an open-minded, professional and intellectual community, bringing peace and calculability to the life of the theatre.

Although the professional work had been constant at Vígszínház during the last period, on the 4th of September, nearly after a 10 months break, Vígszínház will be open for the audience again.

“I haven’t led the theatre in peacetime yet, but perhaps I have learned more in this unpredictable situation. This one year of course, hasn’t been enough for us to accomplish all of our artistic goals. My aim is still to continue the tradition of a popular theatre, namely transmitting the values of the high culture, of the classic and contemporary drama to a wide audience, meanwhile bringing back that bourgeois taste and way of thinking, which had been a characteristic of Vígszínház in its golden era. I will continue to represent what I did so far: I wish peace and order in the theatre. I wish our life to be more calculable. I would like to create a family- and life-friendly workplace” - said in his speech Péter Rudolf, the director of Vígszínház for the next 5 years.

The season will start with the premieres that had been delayed or streamed online, so till the end of December we will have the usual 3-3 premieres both at Vígszínház and at Pesti Theatre. Vígszínház has always been a pioneer in creating new, self-developed musical stage works. This year, the creators of ‘The Great Gatsby’ wrote the script and music of ‘Children of Paradise’ adapting the cult film of Marcel Carné and Jacques Prévert. The unique, sensitive and sensual story will be premiered on the 4th of September, written by Miklós Vecsei H., with the music by Adrián Kovács, staged by Attila Vidnyánszky Jr. The performance is played among others by: Zoltán Gyöngyösi, Csilla Radnay, József Wunderlich, Andrea Waskovics, Géza Hegedűs D., Attila Csapó, Zsombor Ertl, Ákos Kőszegi, István Hirtling and it will also be the debut of Balázs Bölkény, one of the newest members of Vígszínház.

The performance ‘The Stone’ directed by Michael Dočekal will be premiered on the 18th of September at Pesti Színház, starring Dorottya Antóci, Barbara Hegyi, Tünde Majsai-Nyilas, Csenge Szilágyi, Péter Telekes and Eszter Nagy-Kálóczy, a new member of Vígszínház. The play is a beautiful confession of family legends, love, betrayal and resumption.

The ‘Cabaret’ staged by Attila Béres had an opening in the summer at Margaret Island, and it will be premiered on the big stage of Vígszínház on the 9th of October. The story takes place in Berlin, at the beginning of the 1930’s. A real metropolis, where everything can and will happen. Sally Bowles is portrayed by Csenge Szilágyi and Enikő Dobó, other roles are played among others by Bence Brasch, Éva Igó, András Kern and Zoltán Seress.

On the 22nd of October at Pesti Theatre we will have the premiere of ‘Bella Figura’, staged by Ferenc Török. The play is written by Yasmina Reza, a French playwright with Hungarian origin. On this particular birthday, on this romantic, beautiful summer night nothing happens in the way the participants have planned and the evening takes a surreal turn. Among Patrícia Kovács and András Stohl, two new members of Vígszínház, the audience can also meet Judit Halász, József Wunderlich and Csilla Radnay in the performance.

Following the concept of the season, namely showing modern stories and world premieres for our audience, on the 4th of December our next premier will be a contemporary comedy called ‘Play’, staged by Béla Paczolay at Pesti Theatre. Some years ago the movie ‘The Party’ by Sally Potter had been a huge success so the English screenwriter and director has made a stage adaptation of the film. The play talks about the burnout of the intellectuals, the disunion and the traps of the personal life in a very amusing way. The performance is played by Bence Brasch, Barbara Hegyi, Éva Igó, Patrícia Kovács, Sándor Lukács, Csenge Szilágyi and Péter Telekes.

The last premier of the year will be on the 11th of December at Vígszínház. The Seagull by Chekhov will be staged by David Doiasvili, the director of the Vaso Abashidze Music and Drama State Theatre, Tbilisi. His person and his directorial view is a guarantee, that this often played classic will be shown by a new approach, enriched with new meanings and contents to the audience. The main roles are played by Andrea Waskovics, Eszter Nagy-Kálóczy, Attila Vidnyánszky Jr. and András Stohl.
